The siblings of Oksana Masters, the multi-sport Paralympic athlete of Ukrainian descent from Louisville, Kentucky is our focal point in this writing.

Masters was born in Ukraine in 1989 with significant physical abnormalities caused most likely by radiation exposure from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident.

Shortly after her birth, she was placed for adoption. Her first seven and a half years were spent in the country’s failing orphanage system, where malnutrition and mental and physical abuse were frequent.

Masters has two World Cup bronze medals and one UCI Para-Cycling Worlds bronze.

She won Gold in the Women’s Sprint Sitting: the Para Biathlon  and Gold in the Women’s Long Distance Sitting: Silver in cross-country skiing at the Beijing 2022 Paralympics.

Oksana had no siblings growing up.

She was all alone living with her adopted family in the United States.

Who are her biological parents?

Her biological parents abandoned her in a Ukrainian orphanage, where she resided until she was seven years old.

She had tibial hemimelia (differing leg lengths), missing weight-bearing shinbones in her calves, webbed fingers with no thumbs, and six toes on each foot due to radiation-induced birth defects.
